ਸੁਖਦੀਪ ਸਿੰਘ ਬਰਨਾਲਾ ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਦੇ ਲੇਖਕ, ਕਵੀ ਅਤੇ ਸੁਤੰਤਰ ਡਾਕੂਮੈਂਟਰੀ ਫਿਲਮਕਾਰ ਹਨ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਪੰਜਾਬ ਦੇ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ, ਅਤੇ ਸਿਆਸੀ ਸੰਘਰਸ਼ਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਜਾਗਰ ਕਰਦਾ ਹੈ। ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਆਪਣਾ ਸਾਹਿਤਕ ਸਫ਼ਰ ਛੋਟੇ ਹੁੰਦਿਆਂ ਹੀ ਸ਼ੁਰੂ ਕੀਤਾ ਅਤੇ ਜਨਵਰੀ 2006 ਵਿੱਚ, ਕੇਵਲ 20 ਸਾਲ ਦੀ ਉਮਰ ਵਿੱਚ ਆਪਣੀ ਪਹਿਲੀ ਕਿਤਾਬ 'ਜੰਗਨਾਮਾ ਸਿੰਘਾਂ 'ਤੇ ਬਿਪਰਾਂ' ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਿਤ ਕੀਤੀ।
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਕੁੱਲ ਛੇ ਕਿਤਾਬਾਂ ਲਿਖੀਆਂ ਹਨ—ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਵਿੱਚ ਦੋ ਨਾਵਲ ਅਤੇ ਚਾਰ ਕਵਿਤਾ ਸੰਗ੍ਰਿਹ ਹਨ
ਲਿਖਤ ਤੋਂ ਅੱਗੇ ਵੱਧਦੇ ਹੋਏ, ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੇ ਡਾਕੁਮੈਂਟਰੀ ਮਾਧਿਅਮ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਵੀ ਆਪਣੀ ਆਵਾਜ਼ ਪਹੁੰਚਾਈ ਅਤੇ ਹੁਣ ਤੱਕ ਚਾਰ ਮਹੱਤਵਪੂਰਨ ਡਾਕੂਮੈਂਟਰੀਆਂ ਤਿਆਰ ਕੀਤੀਆਂ ਹਨ:

Jallianwala: The Inside Story (2019) — ਇਸ ਕਤਲੇਆਮ ਨੂੰ ਸਿੱਖ ਨਜ਼ਰੀਏ ਤੋਂ ਪੇਸ਼ ਕਰਦੀ, ਨਾ ਕਿ ਬਰਤਾਨਵੀ ਜਾਂ ਭਾਰਤੀ ਦ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਟੀਕੋਣ ਤੋਂ
In the Name of Order (2026) — ਪਹਿਲੀ ਵਾਰ ਜਨਰਲ ਡਾਇਰ ਦੀ ਗੁਪਤ ਗਵਾਹੀ ਨੂੰ ਸਾਹਮਣੇ ਲਿਆਉਂਦੀ ਹੈ
ਉਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦਾ ਕੰਮ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਪੈਦਾ ਕੀਤੇ ਜਾ ਰਹੇ ਰਲਾਅ ਨੂੰ ਚੁਣੌਤੀ ਦੇਂਦਾ ਹੈ ਅਤੇ ਖ਼ਾਸ ਕਰਕੇ ਸਿੱਖ ਨਜ਼ਰੀਏ ਤੋਂ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਆਵਾਜ਼ਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਉਭਾਰਦਾ ਹੈ ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨੂੰ ਅਕਸਰ ਨਜ਼ਰਅੰਦਾਜ਼ ਕੀਤਾ ਗਿਆ ਹੈ।
ਉਹ ਆਪਣੇ ਕੰਮ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਇਤਿਹਾਸ ਨੂੰ ਸਿਰਫ਼ ਬਿਆਨ ਨਹੀਂ ਕਰਦੇ, ਸਗੋਂ ਉਸਨੂੰ ਸਵਾਲ ਕਰਦੇ, ਸਮਝਦੇ ਅਤੇ ਆਉਣ ਵਾਲੀਆਂ ਪੀੜ੍ਹੀਆਂ ਲਈ ਸੰਭਾਲਦੇ ਹਨ।
Sukhdeep Singh Barnala is a Punjabi writer, poet, and independent documentary filmmaker whose work focuses on Punjab’s history, political struggles, and collective memory. He began his literary journey at a young age, publishing his first book in January 2006 at just 20 years old.
Over the years, he has authored six books—including two novels and four poetry collections—reflecting themes of resistance, identity, and historical truth.
Expanding his voice beyond print, he moved into visual storytelling and has created four impactful documentaries:
Five Rivers (2016) — exploring Punjab’s river water dispute
The Other Side of Freedom (2017) — examining the Partition of Punjab in 1947
Jallianwala: The Inside Story (2019) — presenting the massacre from a Sikh perspective, beyond colonial and nationalist narratives
In the Name of Order (2026) — revealing, for the first time, the secret testimony of General Dyer, released in both Punjabi and English
His work challenges dominant historical narratives and seeks to bring forward overlooked voices—especially from the Sikh perspective—grounded in truth, empathy, and lived experience.
Through his platform, he continues to document, question, and preserve history for future generations.
